I’m Alexander Sweetwood, President of Unique Photo — one of America’s largest independent camera retailers, with stores in Fairfield, NJ and Philadelphia, PA. We’ve been at it since 1947.
I live in Montville, NJ 07045. I’m raising my kids here. I show up at the same schools, the same library, the same rec fields, the same diners as everyone else in this town.

I love Montville. I don’t agree with every decision the township, the board, or the schools make — and I’ll be honest about that when it matters. But the way you respect a place is by participating in it, not by complaining about it from somewhere else.
This page exists because `montville.org` belongs to a person who actually lives here, and I wanted that.
Montville Township is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, about 25 miles west of Manhattan and home to roughly 22,000 residents. The township sits in the foothills of the Highlands and is split into four well-known sections: Montville proper (the historic village center along Main Road / Route 202), Towaco (its own ZIP code 07082, anchored by the Towaco train station on NJ Transit’s Montclair-Boonton Line), Pine Brook (the southern, more commercial side along Route 46), and the Lake Valhalla community on the eastern edge.
The township was officially incorporated in 1867, carved out of Pequannock Township, and traces its name back to French Huguenot and Dutch settlers who farmed the Rockaway River valley. Today the historic Doremus House, the Henry Doremus House (a National Register site where George Washington reportedly stayed in 1777), and the Old Dutch Cemetery still anchor the town’s sense of place.
ZIP codes: 07045 (Montville), 07082 (Towaco), 07058 (Pine Brook). Area code: 973. Major roads: I-287, US-202 (Main Road), US-46, Route 511 (Boonton Avenue), Changebridge Road, and Hook Mountain Road. The township borders Boonton Town, Boonton Township, Kinnelon, Lincoln Park, Parsippany-Troy Hills, and Fairfield (Essex County) across the Passaic River.
Schools are run by the Montville Township Public Schools district: Cedar Hill Elementary, William Mason Elementary (Hilldale), Valley View Elementary, Robert R. Lazar Middle School, and Montville Township High School — a consistently top-ranked Morris County high school. The Montville Township Public Library sits on Horseneck Road. Recreation is centered around Camp Dawson, Community Park, and the township ball fields used by LVC, MTLL Little League, and MTSC soccer.
What to actually do here: hike the Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area and the famous Tripod Rock glacial erratic; walk the Patriots’ Path along the Rockaway River; eat a slice at Montville Inn or grab a bagel from one of the half-dozen 07045 bagel shops every Saturday morning; bring the kids to the Montville Reservoir loop; or just drive Main Road from the Towaco border down to the Lincoln Park line on a fall afternoon — it is genuinely one of the prettiest stretches of road in Morris County.
Lake Valhalla is a private lake community in eastern Montville built in the 1920s around a 50-acre spring-fed lake. The LVC clubhouse, beach, tennis courts, and softball fields host one of the most competitive adult slow-pitch softball leagues in northern New Jersey every summer — which is exactly why this page links to the season home on day one.
